The Economics of Alcohol Control Policy in Canada

As our most popular recreational drug, alcohol enjoys special cultural and economic significance in Canada. This presentation will look at several economic issues related to alcohol control including government retail monopolies, the impact of inflation on alcohol prices, international trade agreements and alcohol, best practice pricing policies for reducing alcohol-related harms, and a comparison of the costs and benefits of alcohol in society.
The objectives of this learning teleconference are:
- To understand several economic issues related to alcohol control policy;
- To understand best practice economic policies for reducing the health and social harms from alcohol;
- To understand current status of alcohol control policies in Canada.
This learning teleconference will be moderated by Dr. Gerald Thomas, a Senior Research and Policy Analyst for the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse. This presentation will include time for a Q & A session.
