Issues to Watch.

This is a monthly discussion of "issues to watch" in the field of alcohol policy.

Summer 2005

New ARAPO Coordinator

To begin, the Alcohol Policy Network (APN) would like to extend a warm welcome to Rebecca Fortin, the new program coordinator for the Association to Reduce Alcohol Promotion in Ontario (ARAPO). Rebecca comes to the project with an honours degree in Health Studies from the University of Waterloo, with comprehensive research and writing experience. We are excited to have her onboard. Welcome Rebecca!

Ontario's beverage alcohol review system

Since January 2005, health professionals, researchers, concerned safety groups, and industry representatives have been consulted in regards to potential changes made to the way alcohol is distributed in Ontario. The Ontario government appointed an expert panel to conduct a broad review of Ontario's beverage alcohol system and to develop recommendations on how to get more value from the system for both consumers and taxpayers. These recommendations are to be released over the summer months. Stay tuned to the APOLNET listserv for information on these recommendations once they are released.

Risky Drinking – The Unconference

"Risky Drinking – The Unconference" will be held in Toronto on June 26-28, 2005. This conference will consist of 50 secondary school youth and 50 health professionals meeting and discussing issues around alcohol promotion and its effects on underage youth. The conference is co-sponsored by Parent Action on Drugs, APN, and ARAPO and is funded by Health Canada. APN and ARAPO will also be hosting a teleconference to discuss the objectives of the Risky Drinking conference and will present current Canadian data in relation to the effects of alcohol advertisement on underage youth. Stay tuned to the APOLNET listserv for further information.
