Privatization

After prohibition, a number of countries introduced government-run alcohol retailing systems, also referred to as alcohol retailing monopolies. Over time, there have been a number of initiatives to fully or partially discontinue these systems, and transform them into private networks. Globally there has been research, debate and discussion of the pros and cons of such initiatives. In Ontario, such initiatives have been proposed at least five time in the past four decades, and, in each case there has been a wide range of perspectives on the particular proposal.

This information pack is designed to provide users with access to current and background information on the issues surrounding privatization, including the current regulatory framework, policy and position papers, and research studies from around the world. The background information includes the speeches and reports stemming from the Symposium on Privatization in 1995.

While we have and continue to accumulate publications and references from a broad range of sources, we also welcome any suggested additions to the list.
