ARAPO Updates
May 2005
The fine people at Taco Bell once told us that "change is good." Thus, as ARAPO enters the new program year, several changes have been implemented by staff and committee members. One change is the formation of this new web section. As the name suggests, this section will monthly update colleagues and professionals about the recent initiatives and upcoming events of ARAPO, and in time, replace the ARAPO ADS UP! newsletter. In the meantime, be sure to check out the Spring 2005 (and final) edition of ARAPO ADS UP! [PDF].
Over the past several months, ARAPO has collaborated with other leading public health agencies in some very important initiatives. The most prominent issue among the alcohol field at present is the proposed changes to the alcohol distribution system in Ontario. As described on January 11, 2005, the Ontario government appointed an expert panel to conduct a broad review of Ontario's beverage alcohol system (2005) and to develop recommendations on how to get more value from the system for both consumers and taxpayers.
Regrettably, the Premier refused a public health voice on the panel which caused great concern among the public health field. In response to this review, ARAPO (as a project of OPHA) along with seven other leading organizations composed a joint submission to the panel [PDF].
In addition to this submission, ARAPO was a key organization in holding an alcohol policy forum in early March. Alcohol: No Ordinary Commodity II was held in Toronto and attended by 90+ health professionals, researchers, and government staff. For presentation materials and recommendations, please visit the Resources/Education portion of our website.
ARAPO looks excitedly to the 2005-2006 program year. ARAPO will continue to provide its high-demand services from past years, and looks forward to increasing services as it enters the new program year.
ARAPO gratefully acknowledges the support of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for its programming.
ARAPO is the host of APN's Alcohol Advertising Information Pack.
